One of the granddaddies of electric metering in Europe and a serious smart meter competitor in the U.S., the Landis+Gyr smart grid playing field took on a new dimension as of May 2011. That's when Japanese electronics giant Toshiba announced it was acquiring Landis+Gyr for $2.3 billion. Toshiba said Landis+Gyr smart grid solutions will be rolled into a new energy solution package for smart grid and smart community initiatives. The Landis+Gyr smart grid brand is expected to remain intact and help Toshiba expand into the smart grid market.

Toshiba has said that Landis+Gyr smart grid technologies and services, and its customer base, combined with its own expertise in energy management for utilities and the corporate and consumer sectors, will enable it to provide sophisticated one-stop solutions.
