There’s More Money Out There – And It’s Closer to Home
The Smart Grid Investment Grants announced today are just one piece of the action when it comes to DOE dollars for energy projects. All 50 states are receiving millions of dollars in stimulus funds to support local initiatives - and it's not too late to tap in.

FOA: Interconnection Transmission
The DOE announced it will issue up to $80 million in ARRA-funded grants to support long-term, coordinated interconnection transmission planning across the country. Under the program, state and local governments, utilities and other stakeholders will collaborate on the development and implementation of the next generation of high-voltage transmission networks. This copy of the FOA outlines the funding opportunity in detail.

FOA: State Electricity Regulators Assistance
The Department of Energy will award $50 million in stimulus funds to support state public utility commissions and their role in regulating and overseeing new electricity projects, which can include Smart Grid developments, renewable energy and energy efficiency programs, carbon capture and storage projects, etc. The funds will be used by states and public utility commissions to hire new staff and retrain existing employees to accelerate reviews of the large number of electric utility requests expected under the Recovery Act. This copy of the FOA includes pertinent details.

FOA: Enhancing State Government Energy Assurance Capabilities and Planning for Smart Grid Resiliency
The Recovery Act includes nearly $40 million for state governments to improve emergency preparedness plans and ensure the resiliency of the country’s electrical grid. Funds will be used by cities and states to hire or retrain staff to prepare them for issues such as integrating Smart Grid technology into the transmission network, critical infrastructure interdependencies, and cyber-security. This is a copy of the FOA that spells out all the details.

Millions in Stimulus Dollars Head West
Western governors meeting in Utah got good news from senior Obama Administration officials, who announced nearly $230 million in stimulus funds would be heading West for Smart Grid, transmission and renewable energy projects. Even state public utility commissions get a piece of the ARRA action, according to the June 15 announcement.

Smart Grid Status and Opportunities in Illinois
Using the economic stimulus bill as one catalyst, the 2009 Illinois Smart Grid Initiative (ISGI) Report maps out how can transform the electric grid into a smart grid and set the standard for the nation in stimulating the economy and protecting the environment.

Smart Grid: The Tuesday Topic - Smart Grid News - Grid Modernization and the Smart Grid

 THE TUESDAY TOPIC

Is the smart grid industry stalled? Or accelerating?

We're getting mixed signals about the vitality of the smart grid market. On the one hand, the recent DistribuTECH conference was one of the most successful ever. On the other, a well-known Wall Street analyst recently told his clients that the smart metering sector is "facing several headwinds," including weak regulatory support in the U.S. and delays in European adoption. Taking the pulse of the smart grid industry is this week's Tuesday Topic.
